One of my favourite bloggers, Slim Paley wrote a great post on the popularity of statement necklaces.
You can read it here.
I wholeheartedly agreed, got enthused at the idea and bought another one over the holidays.
It's going to be regifted to someone near and dear to me very soon.

I love them on other people, I have a few myself, but here's the thing... I don't reach for them. I gaze at them, may even pull them out of my jewelry box and hold them up...and then pass right over and reach for my bracelets.
We all have favourite body parts to adorn and mine just doesn't happen to be my neck.
That hasn't stopped me from amassing a small collection of lovely necklaces and each time I purchase one I have full intentions of wearing the heck out of it...then I don't. I just don't want to shout...look here by drawing attention to my neck.
I believe in healthy aging, try to be kind about my aging body parts but my neck is going downhill faster than anything else.
I read Nora Ephron's, I Feel Bad About My Neck years ago and now I'm living it.

My personal preference is not the balanced look of things on both wrists, so it all gets loaded on one arm for drama. Some would say my personality is a little off balance too.
These are a few of my favourite's and occasionally I'll add a charm bracelet to the mix if I don't mind being loud. I'm not a shrinking violet but there are some occasions that call for a slightly quieter presence or I'm wearing fragile fabrics that catch on the charms.

No it's not snowing inside, this is taken reflected through an antique mirror.

I suppose these have become part of my signature look because I wear them so frequently.
What's a tad scary is that the watch is now considered vintage and I bought it new.
We bought the Baraka bracelet in Capri 20 (gulp) or more years ago and David Yurman stopped making this other bracelet centuries earlier.

What's your favourite type of sparkle?
Do you have a signature piece of jewelry?
Haven't figured out how to photograph myself yet but starting with body parts for visible Monday.

I love your bracelets!! Gorgeous! My signature pieces of jewelry are my wedding ring and my David Yarmin watch my husband gave me a few years back.
ReplyDeleteI think the Yurman pieces are timeless. His watches are gorgeous.
DeleteBeautiful bracelets! I am more a bracelet than necklace woman, I think because necklaces start to itch/annoy me at some point in the day. I do love Wendy Brandes' creative jewelry and would like to collect more. Nora Ephron's book was so wonderful, she is missed.
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining in at Visible Monday!
She was very funny!! I haven't seen Wendy Brandes jewelry, I'll need to take a look.
DeleteI'm definitely a bracelet girl. I have so many in my silver bangle collection that I finally decided to split them up and wear them on both wrists. This is a relatively new look for me. I love your bracelets!!! I'm with you on necklaces too. I love them on other people but I end up wearing earrings instead. And rings, I love rings. Funny how we gravitate toward some things and not others.
ReplyDeleteI'm a ring lover too. I stack them on the same hand as the bracelets.
DeleteYour bracelets are very pretty and I like the way you emphasize one side.. an off balance look:) My signature pieces would be my wedding ring and an necklace with my original wedding diamond. I also wear a second chain with a circular diamond piece. Both are very light and simple. I am looking for the perfect wrist accessory. I work in the medical field, so I'm limited in what I can wear.
ReplyDeleteleslie
I knew instantly when I saw these that they were perfect for me. You'll know too. Part of the fun is the discovery.
DeleteI am with you - only wear on one side, too. I canT really do statement necklaces - maybe because I am too busty? Just don't reach for them; am feeling the need to be more subtle as I age I guess!
ReplyDeleteThey are hard to carry off if you're busty. Subtle was never in my repertoire but things change with age.
DeleteI love your bracelets-- so effective combined on one hand with that watch. I'm rarely without a bracelet, generally a wide silver one, although I always have to take it off when writing, and then fear losing it some day . . .
ReplyDeleteThat's why I wear mine on my left wrist, I'm right handed and hate to have them clang on the counter or desk. I hope you're feeling better!!
ReplyDeleteHello Jennifer:
ReplyDeleteWhatever the occasion, and whatever is chosen to be worn, we should always go for the understated look and so are completely at one with you over avoiding drawing attention to oneself.
I love the look of a watch stacked with bracelets, as you've so expertly done, but I never seem to be able to make it work. I think the face of my watch is too small - bracelets seem to overwhelm it.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I reach for bracelets more often than necklaces. My favorite is a yellow gold Hawaiian heirloom-style bangle bought way back when gold was actually affordable. :)
I'm not someone who loads themselves up with jewellery, but I do like a few pieces. I tend to opt for smaller pieces because that's what I'm comfortable with. I love your style of wearing what you like on one wrist. I loved that Nora Ephron book as well. Wendy Brandes stuff is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThe seasons (even in LA) affect what jewelry I wear. In the winter, unless it's very warm, I almost never wear a necklace, as it doesn't do much over sweaters, etc. So I wear bracelets more often. I wear a man's Rolex on one side and stack bracelets on the other wrist. I have a smaller Cartier watch that when I wear, I stack it together with bracelets. I do love rings, but only wear one at a time - if I a large ring, I only wear a thin gold band on my wedding ring finger - not my original set. I love your bracelets - they just look great on you.
ReplyDeleteGreat point Kathy. I do tend to wear the necklaces I do have in the summer more than winter.
DeleteMy dear what fabulous bracelets! So happy to see you onVisible Monday!!! I too have ended up with a whole collection of vintage jewelry... funny how that happens :)
ReplyDeleteI'm waiting for your collection of bracelets Tamera!!!
DeleteI too wear bracelets stacked (including my charm bracelet). I like the feel of the weight on my wrist. I like necklaces as well, but usually don't wear big statement pieces. I do love wearing a string of pearls though.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree. Pearls go with everything and dress up anything.
DeleteLove your blog!!!
ReplyDeleteSo happy to have found you! I love your Lucy. She loves the sweater as much as mine does. haha
I'm a minimalist when it comes to jewelry. Usually, my watch and my wedding ring is all I wear. I'd love to learn to wear more without being self conscious.
Wishing you a fabulous week!
Welcome! Lucy has still not forgiven me, and is still wearing her sweater.
DeleteMy neck looks ten years older than the rest of me, it's horrible all crepy and hangy, I'm going to start wrapping my hair round it.
ReplyDeleteAnd you have fabulous hair to do it with Tabs! Mine is too short. Scarves work better for me.
DeleteThat's a lovely set on your wrist, I very rarely wear any jewellery, it just isn't me. So for fancy nights out and then it's off the minute I get back in the car.
ReplyDeleteKnowing what's "you" and what isn't is the definition of having great personal style. You have it in spades Doll!!
DeleteHave a great week.
I have several Yurman bracelets that are what I consider my signature style, I wear them almost every day. I have stacks of other bracelets but rarely wear them. I also have a huge collection of necklaces which I used to wear all the time. Now I have a few that I wear often.
ReplyDeleteLove your bracelets and watch.
You so made me smile with your humor about why you reach for bracelets (I do too!) more often than necklaces ... and I LOVE your arm candy, indeed! David Yurman does have some gorgeous and timeless pieces, I love them too! Lucky friends you have to be gifted with one of your statement necklaces, however! Thanks for stopping by the Valentine gift tag post today and am so happy that your friends will receive a little fortune cookie gift tag ... maybe their fortune will read "you will soon receive a statement necklace ..." :) lol Have a wonderful week! xo ~S

I love my bracelets, especially my Trollbeads. You can change them all the time for different color combinations or keep it silver or gold only. I also have a simple gold chain with charms my boyfriend gave me in high school and college. We broke up and I kept the charms over many years and since we reunited, I wear it everyday. I'm afraid it's not a fashion statement though. I love your bracelets! :)
ReplyDeleteBracelets. Completely. One one arm today, I have two gold bangles and a jade bangle; on the other, I have my Cartier (the Santos, also "vintage" now), a gold charm bracelet, a gold link bracelet, a pearl bracelet, and two Jeanine Payer silver bracelets. I'd feel odd without my bracelets, but I rarely wear necklaces or rings, and usually wear pearl studs, so the wrists are where I focus my energy and money. However, I tend to wear incredibly simple clothes, so I feel it's not too overboard. And, if it is, I don't actually care.
ReplyDeleteGreat attitude!!
DeleteI can totally relate to this, and therefore I'm a bracelet fanatic myself. I love how you mixed them with and added the watch. Wish David Yurman would bring that one back, it's lovely.
ReplyDeleteLOL! I had a Nora Ephron weekend as I recovered from the flu and then I read your post--there she is again. I never have read that book and am thinking I should because I enjoy her films so much.
ReplyDeleteLove your bracelets and watch together--classy!
Thank you. Hope you're feeling better.
Deleteno wonder I have been gravitating towards sequins and sparkly baubles and bits.
ReplyDeletelove how sparkles with casual clothing can instantly make one feel all dressed up!

I love this thoughtful post! Hmm signature jewellery, I always wear a flat small diamond plate from Bulgari around my neck, it' s so small that it's never in the way when sleeping or sporting or any other jewellery. I also always wear my watch with a thin diamond tennis bracelet to it. I love jewellery that you can wear at any time. For other occasions I accessorize big time, then it doesn't have to be the real stuff:) Love Caroline
ReplyDeleteI will go read that suggested post- but I like yours! Like you I like necklaces, but don't wear them. Part of it- metal allergy but I also favor the wrists as adornment limbs, over the ears, neck or other. I also LOVE the look of statement necklaces, even when it was out of mode, but they look great- such drama.
ReplyDeleteI do tend towards the dramatic as well sometimes. What's the fun of fitting in??
DeleteI LOVE this post, Jennifer...yes, I do have a signature piece of jewellery...it is my Tiffany diamond cross my husband gave me on our tenth wedding anniversary, I love it as much 16 years later as I did when he gave it to me...when I opened the box I cried; I can remember that morning so clearly.
ReplyDeleteThank you for popping by today and leaving your lovely, kind words.
Catherine

You have it just right. Looks great, and modern, and considered. Nice with a neutral outfit ... jewelry is meant to be showcased.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful gold necklace that my husband designed for me, with his name and mine abstract in a heart shape. I love it. Of course. It takes people a minute to make out what it says, sometimes not sure if it "says" anything.
ReplyDeleteYour bracelets are fantastic.
Loved your photo of yourself!
ReplyDeleteA very hard feat to manage. My statement necklace is corals with pearls.
Have had it for years (about thirty!) and restrung several times.
Greetings from New York.
I love necklaces which I can wear with a scarf, such as a pearl necklace or a chain intertwined with a scarf. A scarf is such a great way to hide neck flaws...
ReplyDeleteYour bracelets are terrific, Jennifer.
Just one thing though - that you probably already know: a watch with bracelets around is always nice BUT it will eventually ruin the watch (scratches, plating gone after a while...) So be careful about that!
xo,
Anne Touraine (Playing with Scarves)
I love the loading of your wrist. My statement piece is a strand of south sea pearls I saved for years to purchase. They are gorgeous and I need to wear them more often.
ReplyDeleteI do love a great bracelet and never, ever leave home w/out one. I have a beautiful collection of Hermès bracelets, which my husband starting buying for me many (too many??) years ago. He presents each one w/the same little caveat, "If you don't like it, you can exchange it." I have never exchanged anything he has purchased for me.
ReplyDeleteThere is something so feminine about a bracelet. It gives interest and grace to all of your movements.
We are clearly on the same page. Bracelets, scarves (never leave home w/out one, except in the extreme heat of summer) and earrings are my go-to pieces.
A statement necklace does not have to draw attention to your neck, depending on where it sits on you....décolleté, mid-décolleté, or a "sautoir" (I'm blanking here on the English word...), as the length can draw attention away from your neck.
Well, I've rambled on long enough.....
xoxo, M-T
Hi Jennifer! It's been a crazy busy week for me illustration-wise and am just getting back to you in response to your comment Wednesday .. thanks for the compliment on the illustration and, of course, I'd love to do a custom illustration for you whenever you're ready ... you know where I am :) ... hope you have a super-fabulous weekend, sweetie! xo ~S

I had to come right back after reading your comment just now to say that it brought tears to my eyes and that I can't think of better hands for the gift tag to have ended up in. What a perfect thought you had. Thanks so much for being such a lovely inspiration. xoSandy
ReplyDeleteYOU are inspiring. Your work is stunning!! Thank you!!
DeleteThanks for sharing the link to Slim Paleys article - i just discovered her so I didn't read this yet - but I must say I do like your wrist! i do like lots of bracelets and trinkets, it looks great - and yes the neck is a funny place - i have always had a wrinkley neck - since a baby! but the one place i like is my wrist :)
